Making Waves Academy
Learn. Graduate. Give Back.
We call our students Wave-Makers, referring to the waves they make in their lives after graduating from Making Waves Academy. They are students poised to graduate from high school college-ready. The academic and social-emotional skills they develop at Making Waves Academy prepare them to overcome challenges, graduate from college, give back to their communities, and fulfill their dreams.
Opening in 2007, Making Waves Academy was born out of a history of serving historically underserved students in Richmond, California. Today, it educates more than 1,000 students, primarily socio-economically disadvantaged, students of color from Richmond and the surrounding West Contra Costa County area, providing access to a high-quality K-12 education and the opportunity to gain acceptance to college, graduate, and achieve their goals.
Making Waves Academy’s holistic approach focuses on academic preparation, social-emotional development and helping students to identify their strengths and interests towards a pathway that enables them to fulfill their dreams. College readiness at Making Waves Academy includes offering Wave-Makers and their families wrap-around support services including psychological supports, academic tutoring, college counseling, and career pathway development.
Each year, nearly 100% of Making Waves Academy Upper School seniors graduate. In the most recent graduating senior class of 2018, 100% of graduates committed to college. In total, 95% of MWA graduates are enrolled in post-secondary institutions, 70% in four-year colleges and universities, and 25% in community colleges.
