Nice to meet you!
About me

My approach

As a proud member of the Richmond community, I am honored to support students from similar backgrounds as they strive to create better futures for themselves. My passion lies in coaching and empowering students to grow, learn, reflect, and transform into the individuals they aspire to be. I am committed to fostering a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable being honest and open about their lives and college experiences. Whether by actively listening or offering guidance, insights, and recommendations, my goal is to provide meaningful support tailored to each student's unique journey. Above all, I want every student I work with to know they are valued, supported, and have someone in their corner, championing their success.

My bio

Dr. Antonio Martinez (he/him) is a dedicated College Coach at Making Waves Education Foundation, where he empowers students, known as Wave-Makers, to overcome academic and personal challenges and stay on course to graduate. With a background in mass communication (BA, California State University, East Bay), education with a focus on multicultural counseling (MA, San Diego State University), and educational leadership (EdD, CSU East Bay), Dr. Martinez brings a wealth of expertise to his role. His prior experience as an Educational Opportunity Program Director further solidified his commitment to supporting first-generation and underserved students. Dr. Martinez finds deep meaning in helping students navigate higher education, offering tailored guidance that reflects his own journey as a first-generation college graduate.

If you could do college over again, what is one piece of advice you would give yourself?

I would have prioritized gaining more internship experience. While I was deeply focused on my coursework and campus involvement, I did not dedicate as much time to my professional development which I now recognize was necessary.

What is your favorite college memory?

My favorite college memory is joining a fraternity, which provided me with opportunities to travel to places I never imagined and build lifelong friendships. Through this experience, I formed strong bonds with my fraternity brothers and gained valuable lessons that have shaped me both personally and professionally.
