A message from Dr. Kristina Wright

Dear Making Waves community,

After 23 and a half years, it’s time for me to say farewell to the place that has shaped so much of who I am.

My journey with Making Waves began as a tutor with the Making Waves Education Program in Richmond in 2002. Back then, I was simply a young woman from Richmond with a deep love for learning and a strong desire to give back to my community. I never imagined the path would lead to over two decades of service, growth, and transformation — both personally and professionally.

It’s been the honor of my life to walk alongside over 1,500 of our students and families as they pursue bold dreams and create new possibilities for themselves and for generations to come.

As someone who grew up and attended school in Richmond, serving this community has been more than just work — it’s been a calling. Every challenge, every breakthrough, every conversation has reinforced my belief in the power of education and the brilliance within each of our Wave-Makers. You’ve inspired me more than you’ll ever know.

Now, I’m stepping into a new chapter — one where I’ll continue to impact students in different ways and be more present with my own family. While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, I leave with a full heart and deep gratitude.

To our students: Please keep going. You are capable of doing hard things. Stay the course, trust your growth, and never forget that a dream without a plan is just a wish. Keep making plans, taking steps, and charting your own path. You’ve got this.

With love and endless belief in you all,

Dr. Kristina Wright

Q&A with Jon Siapno

I’m excited to share that Jon Siapno will be stepping into the role of VP of Impact & Experience.

  • He’s been with us for three years and has already led big changes like our AI copilot and digital payments — both based on what students said they needed.
  • Jon brings over 10 years of experience helping young people reach their college and career goals.
  • Now he’ll be leading the college, career, and financial teams with a focus on real impact and economic mobility.

While many of you might already know Jon from his time as Director of College and Career Counseling at Making Waves Academy, do you know his go-to comfort food? Or favorite movie? Find out below!

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Lately it’s been chunky peanut butter and strawberry jelly – not the smooth jelly, but the ones with chunks of fruit. I’m known to take a spoon, scoop half chunky peanut butter, half jelly, and keep at it until both jars are gone. If you see me at the grocery store, chances are I’m picking up more jelly!

What’s one song that always gets you pumped up?

“My Way” by Frank Sinatra. It’s actually my dad’s favorite song too. I was at a party where my dad and I sang it together while my cousin played guitar – such a memorable experience that always makes me smile.

What’s one movie you can watch over and over?

I just watched the live action Lilo and Stitch, and I could watch it over and over. It has everything – family, humor, heart, and a little sci-fi action! Ohana means family!

Would you rather always be 10 minutes late or 20 minutes early?

20 minutes early, definitely! If I’m going to the Making Waves office, I usually bring lots of snacks and I need those 20 minutes just to put them all in the fridge.

Would you rather give up your phone for a month or your favorite streaming service for a year?

I couldn’t live without my phone – easily give up any streaming service. I’m guilty of turning on Netflix but never actually paying attention to it anyway!

I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you better too. And yes, I’ll probably still ask you “what’s your why?” – because your stories and motivations inspire me every day.
