supporting our expansion in
Contra Costa County, please email
Making Waves Foundation (MWF) is expanding its presence in Contra Costa County. The Foundation has committed $2M to Pittsburg to increase educational opportunities for students in need. We are pleased to announce that MWF launched the first phase of this program in December with Pittsburg Unified School District and Pittsburg High School. CAP, MWF’s college success program, is providing college-readiness workshops as well as the opportunity for up to 25 PHS seniors to receive scholarships and college coaching.
Our team has been working closely with Pittsburg High School’s college counselors, principal, and others to design this initial program. The effort aims to help socioeconomically disadvantaged youth be prepared to enroll in college and ultimately graduate in a timely manner with little to no debt.
There are two components of our initial collaboration with Pittsburg High School (PHS) beginning in December 2020:
- CAP will provide a series of facilitated online workshops for PHS students
- CAP will launch an application process to admit 25 students from PHS’ senior class to receive scholarship support and college success coaching beginning in their first year of college (2021)
PHS Workshop Program
Our workshops are designed to reach all graduating seniors regardless of their destination after college. We are hoping to equip students with some additional tools that will support their future success. Each workshop will serve as an information source as well as have an interactive self-reflection component. A session may involve one or more of the following: polls, surveys, and activities. The intent is that each participant is able to apply the learning to their own situation. While our focus is on students and their experience, we warmly welcome parents/guardians to join and engage in the sessions along with their students. In addition, a monthly newsletter will be sent out to all parents/guardians with general information about their students’ college experience and how to support them as their family transitions together.
Workshops will be conducted virtually with program staff from January–May of 2021. Access to these workshops will ONLY be available through direct contact by the program.
