Making Waves’ scholarships and coaching is open to students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, and first-generation college students from any of the nine Bay Area counties.
From updating our brand to honoring the Class of 2023 – we had a lot to celebrate with our Making Waves community this year. As we continue to partner with students from 5th grade through college and career, help make college affordable and graduation attainable for Bay Area students, and share college and career resources with as many students and families as possible – we also have a lot to look forward to in 2024.

Making Waves brings together the impact of two nonprofits: Making Waves Academy and Making Waves Education Foundation. Together, we are creating equitable access to college and career success for first-generation students of color, and a stronger source of diverse talent in the Bay Area that will accelerate our region’s success.
We are offering scholarships for Bay Area high schoolers from low-income backgrounds. Students will also be enrolled in Making Waves’ college and career success program.
You could earn up to $20,000 in scholarships by texting and being on TikTok. Twenty students from the Bay Area will receive scholarships – and be enrolled in Making Waves Education Foundation’s college and career success program.
Throughout 2023-24, the Making Waves student advisory committee provides feedback and solutions for Wave-Maker specific program initiatives, student engagement efforts, and program policies and procedures.
An English education major at San Francisco State University, Salvador Sandoval is pursuing his passion for creative writing and his goal of becoming a teacher in his hometown of Pittsburg, California. “Making Waves is one of the reasons I am in college,” he shared.
During the 2022-23 academic year, more than 110 of our students received their degrees from more than 25 universities, with nearly 90% of our college graduates this year earning their degrees debt-free.

Making Waves Education Foundation welcomed 15 recent Pittsburg High School graduates into its college and career success program, which provides scholarships and partners each student with a college coach, financial coordinator, and career specialist.
