AI Education and Employment Copilot

Three years ago, we saw an opportunity to use AI to solve a real challenge facing young people – limited access to college and career advising. During the pandemic, we recognized that the counselor shortage (with California’s student-to-counselor ratio at 464-to-1) meant students weren’t getting the guidance they needed for their futures.

We developed an AI copilot, and when ChatGPT burst onto the scene, we were among the first educational organizations to build on top of OpenAI’s groundbreaking conversational AI technology, creating an experience where students could chat about their college and career questions just like texting a real counselor.

We reached 3,000 users across the country and even won first place at the ASU+GSV Education Innovation Showcase. The impact was particularly meaningful for 9th and 10th graders who were often boxed out of counselor meetings focused on seniors.

We recently made the decision to sunset our copilot because, despite our success, we weren’t able to secure the resources needed to continue.

Through our work with experts like Christensen Institute Director Julia Freeland Fisher and a Stanford Graduate School of Business alumni consulting team, we uncovered a more urgent need – addressing the social capital gap that prevents many students from building the networks essential for long-term success.

We wouldn’t change a thing. We’re so proud of the thousands of young people who used our tool, we learned so much engaging with them about their college and career journeys, and we’re excited to take all these learnings and apply them to our charge of positioning young people for economic mobility

As of June 30, 2025, Copilot will no longer be available, but our commitment to equity continues.

Since 2022, our AI copilot reached 3,000 users across the U.S., and in 2024, Making Waves won first place at the ASU+GSV Education Innovation Showcase for this product. Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure the funding needed to continue offering this resource beyond June 30, 2025.

We express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported this journey — from our early adopters and school partners to our dedicated research and engineering teams, as well as the mentors who have guided us along the way.
