Our Model and Impact

What we do

At Making Waves, we’re opening doors to economic mobility. Our programs provide students of color from low-income backgrounds with the educational opportunities, career skills, and financial freedom to meet their goals and thrive. We partner with students as early as 5th grade through high school, college, and into their careers.

Our impact

Wave-Makers are beating the odds

100% Making Waves A-G completion rate, 71% four year college graduation rate, and 86% college grads with $0 in student loans/debt

Wave-Makers are giving back to their communities

Part of the Wave-Maker Affirmation reads “I will be an impossible me and recycle my success.” Our students are passionate about breaking barriers and giving back to their families and communities. Many are pursuing careers in education, healthcare, law, and social work.

College readiness for all

College should be accessible and attainable for all. It opens doors to economic mobility for students from low-income backgrounds and leads to a more diverse and educated workforce. Here’s how Making Waves maintains college as an option for all our students:

Jobs skills, career ready

Work experience is one of the biggest predictors of economic mobility. We partner with students as early as 5th grade and into their first jobs – providing career coaching around the following:

College degrees, debt-free

Knowing the long-term value of obtaining a higher education, we help make college affordable and graduation attainable. We partner with students to help remove barriers and to meet their dreams with personalized support – including:

Why it matters

The biggest drivers to economic mobility are educational attainment and years of work experience so our Making Waves programs are helping remove barriers to these opportunities.
Limited economic mobility
Nearly 60% of people from families with lower levels of income and education earn less than $20,000 per year at age 30, according to the Brookings Institute.
Inequities in higher education, earning potential
College grads earn 84% more over lifetimes than those with only a high school diploma, according to Georgetown University, and economists predict the demand for college graduates will only increase in the next decade. But only 21% of students from low-income backgrounds earn a bachelor’s degree in six years according to the Pell Institute.
Underemployment
For those who make it to earning a bachelor’s degree, more than 50% are underemployed in their first job, which influences their career trajectory, according to the Talent Disrupted report.

Our approach

We center students and their goals

We welcome a range of students into our programs, rather than only the highest academic performers, so we differentiate our approach based on student goals. Our Wave-Maker Success Framework guides our actions as we partner with students to internalize their power and decision-making. We build a trusting community, increase access to information, and help students clarify their purpose and strengthen their skills.

We are all about community

Community is a shared core value across Making Waves. Community is central to our approach and our program participants frequently say the sense of community is what makes our programs unique. This means we focus on authentic, inclusive relationships, intentional collaboration and partnership, and making a positive change in our community.

We are data-driven and always improving

From our founding as an after-school program more than 30 years ago to the innovations we have underway today – continuous improvement is a part of our day-to-day work. Measurement frameworks, data infrastructure, real-time data analysis, and student feedback allow us to make improvements to our programs that create more equity and overall impact.
