Who We Are
Since 1989, Making Waves Foundation has provided educational opportunities that change young lives.
An education foundation located in Richmond, CA, Making Waves remains committed to providing historically underserved and underrepresented students access to an equitable education that will propel them to a successful and rewarding future.
What began in 1989 as an academic afterschool tutoring and support program for 46 5th graders, Making Waves Education Program, has evolved into the opening in 2007 of Making Waves Academy, a tuition-free public charter school serving 5th-12th grade students. We also started the College and Alumni Program (CAP) to provide a critical bridge between college acceptance and college graduation.
In a unique approach to educational equity, Making Waves was an early pioneer of the to and through college model, which takes students on a guided journey from high school through college and the completion of a college degree. Our goal is for students to build sustainable, meaningful lives by becoming successful contributors to the workforce and their communities.
An education foundation located in Richmond, CA, Making Waves Foundation provides the financial, intellectual and material resources to support Making Waves Academy and operate the College and Alumni Program (CAP). The Foundation also acts as the real estate provider for Making Waves Academy.
Additional programs developed by Making Waves Foundation include:
- College Counselor Symposium invites Bay-Area educators to Making Waves to share best practices that promote college success for first-generation students.
- Career Exploration Day brings industry professionals to Making Waves Academy to share personal career insights with students.
- During the Case Study and College Fair, students evaluate college application case studies from the perspective of admissions officers and participate in a traditional college fair.
Making Waves Foundation is a 501C(3) non-profit private-operating organization.
