"Everyone doggedly works together to discover the qualities and gifts which make each Wave-Maker unique, the types of support we can provide and/or refer, and what interests, goals and passions lie within them. Then we chart a course yet remain flexible and creative to ensure successful outcomes."
Providing The Educational Opportunities That Change Lives

Making Waves Education Program - San Francisco
Launched in 2001 under the leadership of Melissa Fries, a former Stanford University administrator and long-time Making Waves staffer, the Making Waves Education Program in San Francisco helps students attend independent schools and provides additional academic course work, tutoring, and homework support after school, Saturdays, and during the summer. MWEP - San Francisco also provides the full complement of Making Waves student supports and other interventions, as necessary, to keep children and families on track.
Located a few blocks south of Franklin Square near the Mission Community Recreation Center, MWEP provides San Francisco students in fifth through eighth grade with skilled tutors who coordinate small-groups in reading, writing, vocabulary development, and study skills for eight to 12 hours per week beyond the standard school day under the guidance of a certified teacher. Compulsory tutoring sessions are held twice weekly and on Saturdays. Students who require additional help are also able to take advantage of academic support throughout the week with access to fully equipped computer labs and resource libraries.
San Francisco high school students receive independent school tuition support and daily individualized academic support and attention. Students regularly meet with teachers, counselors, and tutors; participate in literacy programs; and receive on-site college and career counseling and test preparation assistance. Tutoring is available to students in any course whenever they need it.
