Curriculum and Instructional Design

Building from the Making Waves Education Program’s proven strategies, Making Waves Academy creates a rigorous, holistic academic curriculum that provides the students with an opportunity to complete an educational program that prepares them for high school, college, and beyond. The Academy’s instructional program is designed to empower youth to become analytical thinkers who can apply subject knowledge to solve real-world problems. Based on current knowledge of best practices that work for our targeted student body, we continually update the instructional program and curriculum content to ensure our students’ success.

Courses Offered

Making Waves Academy offers a broad range of rigorous academic courses across all subject areas and also specialized skill development programs in everything from technology to the arts. Individualized Attention

On a regular basis, teachers and staff members help develop, facilitate, and review students’ work to ensure that they are meeting their educational goals. Daily adult facilitators help middle school students develop the time management and core curriculum skills needed to increase their chances of achieving a higher level of success in pursuit of their educational and personal goals.

Making Waves Academy takes a systematic approach to addressing the diverse learning needs of all of the students it serves, including:

• Low-Achieving Students
• High-Achieving Students
• English Language Learners (ELL)
• Special Education Students

Extended School Day and Year

Making Waves believes that having our students for longer amounts of time will greatly improve the achievement of those students. Making Waves Academy offers at least 175 days of instruction every year plus significant after-school and summer programs to increase the amount of instructional time that our students receive.

Because of the extended day and year, all Wave-Makers receive more than twice the number of instructional minutes than their peers in traditional public schools. Students whose needs cannot be met at Making Waves Academy are placed in the most appropriate setting.
