Providing The Educational Opportunities That Change Lives

English Language Learners (ELL)

Many of our students come from families that are non-native English speakers. ELL students receive a specifically designed, academic instruction program in English to ensure access to core curriculum. Designed for non-native English speakers, it focuses on increasing the comprehension of the academic courses typically provided to English-proficient students. Those identified as ELL students receive two daily class periods of English development including listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Program implementation includes:

  • Cooperative learning activities conducted in English, giving students of all proficiency levels the opportunity to practice listening, comprehension, and speaking.
  • Daily writing assignments in core classes.
  • Tutorial components that engage students’ ability in reading-level groups for a part of their after-school program.

By utilizing a variety of instructional strategies, appropriately credentialed teachers, and diverse instructional aides and resources, the Academy ensures a quality program that enables ELL students to attain English language proficiency in all subject areas and to have full access to the range of educational opportunities that the Academy envisions for all students.
