Providing The Educational Opportunities That Change Lives

Summer School
A three-month hiatus from academics is not practical for our students, as they all begin their relationship with Making Waves years behind most of their middle class counterparts. They need significant extra instructional time to catch up, and a long summer vacation hinders both their retention of the material and their growth. Making Waves conducts summer school to increase and enhance the amount of teaching, tutoring, and counseling the students receive. In grades five through eight, Making Waves operates a mandatory three- to five-week, full-day summer program. The curriculum is designed to revisit difficult concepts from the prior academic year, as well as introduce new concepts and problem-solving techniques critical to attaining mastery in the year to come. High school Wave-Makers enroll in two- to three-week workshops that assist them with college applications, standardized testing, and summer classes they may be taking at other institutions.
